I'm posting this a little early in case anyone wants to do it tonight!
Today we'll put the zipper in on the right side of the skirt. When you put the zipper in, don't catch the lining; keep it loose. You'll hand sew that down tomorrow.
I won't reinvent the wheel here. There are a lot of good invisible zipper tutorials available online, and I've made a step by step video for the coffee date dress sew along that you can view here. I would recommend following this invisible zipper tutorial from sewiknit.blogspot.com. Consult this tutorial and watch my video, and then follow the steps below:
Iron the zipper teeth flat. |
Baste the zipper in place. |
Using a zipper foot (preferably an invisible zipper foot), sew the zipper to the skirt. |
Line up the skirt to sew in the other side of the zipper. I find it helps to fold over the other side and make sure the zipper isn't twisted by sliding just the bottom of the zipper up and down. |

Pin the other side of the zipper in place and sew it in. |
This is how the zipper should look. We'll hand sew just beneath the zipper tomorrow. |
Pin the side seam together below the zipper. |
Sew the side seam together, almost to the zipper. There will be a little gap where you can't get any closer. |
Press the seam open. |
